What's Actually Flowing Through Your Pipes — And Why It's Time to Find Out
Most of us don't think about our plumbing until something goes wrong. A dripping faucet, a slow drain, a water bill that suddenly spikes. But the truth is, what's happening inside your home's water system affects your family every single day — whether you notice it or not.

PVC pipes, once celebrated as a modern fix, can leach trace amounts of chemical additives over time. Even some newer homes have seen issues with certain CPVC formulations.
The safest materials for residential drinking water systems right now? Most plumbers and health researchers point to PEX-A tubing and copper (without lead solder) as the top choices. Copper has a long track record of safety, and PEX-A — a flexible, cross-linked polyethylene — has become the go-to for new construction and retrofits alike because it's durable, resistant to freezing, and doesn't leach the chemicals that some older plastics do.
Testing: The Step Most Homeowners Skip
Before you spend a dime on upgrades, test your water. Seriously — this is the most important thing you can do, and it costs between $20 and $150 depending on how comprehensive you want to get.
Your local water utility is required by law to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which tells you what's in the water at the treatment plant. What it doesn't tell you is what happens between the plant and your glass. Activated carbon filters (the kind in pitcher filters and many faucet attachments) are great for chlorine, taste, and odor, but they won't touch lead or nitrates unless the filter is specifically NSF-certified for those contaminants. Always check the certification, not just the marketing copy.
For whole-house filtration — which makes sense if you have sediment issues or want filtered water for bathing and laundry too — look into catalytic carbon or KDF-based systems. These handle chloramines (increasingly used by utilities instead of chlorine) better than standard carbon alone.

Where to Start If You're Overwhelmed
You don't have to overhaul your entire plumbing system this weekend. A realistic, prioritized approach looks something like this:
First: Test your water. Know what you're working with.
Second: If you have pre-1986 plumbing, run your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. It's a free, immediate risk reducer while you plan bigger changes.
Third: Install an NSF-certified filter appropriate to your test results — even a good under-sink carbon filter is a meaningful upgrade for most households.
Fourth: Fix leaks. All of them. A plumber visit to address that running toilet and dripping kitchen faucet will pay for itself within months.
